Period Inspiration:

In 1748, Louis XV bought a plateau above the Seine at Meudon and gave it, a year later, to Madame de Pompadour, the Rococo age’s most consequential tastemaker. She built Bellevue in two years flat - a private pleasure house, furnished not in the gilt and formality of Versailles, but in the cooler, lighter register reserved for undress living: caned chairs, canapés, and beds, favoured through the Régence and Louis XV years precisely because they were less grand than the upholstered furniture of state apartments.

This Louis XV bed revives that register in solid teak. A serpentine crest rises to a carved rocaille cartouche - the shell-and-scroll ornament that gave Rococo its name - above fine hand-cane panels set into the frame. Cabriole legs sweep to a scrolled foot, the whole hand-glazed in a deep hunter green that lets the teak grain read through.

Caning itself is Indian before it is French: cane furniture was already being worked in India by the 2nd century AD, over a thousand years before East India Company trade carried the material to Europe.

A Revival House piece for the principal bedroom: period furniture, French Provincial in spirit, teak in substance.
