The Berkeley Square Flanking Lions Window Seat

Period Inspiration:

An elegant expression of the English Regency’s Grecian taste, this window seat descends from the backless bow-window benches fitted into the fashionable townhouses of early nineteenth-century London, where such pieces furnished bay windows with seating that read well from both the room and the glass. Its paired, outward-scrolling arms are reeded in the convex fluting that Regency cabinet-makers borrowed from antique Roman prototypes, each arm terminating in a carved lion mask - a leonine motif drawn from Greco-Roman furniture ornament and popularised through the pattern books of Thomas Hope, George Smith, and Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository. 

The symmetrical double-scroll form let the seat be approached from either side, ideal for a drawing room, hallway, or window embrasure. It stands on acanthus-bracketed lion’s-paw feet, themselves Regency shorthand for classical antiquity, and is hand-carved in solid teak by master craftsmen working in the Anglo-Indian tradition, where European period forms have long been faithfully rendered in South Asian hardwood. The piece is upholstered in a pale ice-blue velvet, recalling the Neoclassical blues of Wedgwood jasperware. Suited to a formal drawing room, entrance hall, or bedroom window bay, it brings authenticated Regency design language to interiors that favour provenance over trend.
