Period Inspiration:
In the salons of Bloomsbury, where Virginia Woolf entertained and Roger Fry debated the nature of beauty, furniture was never merely functional - it was a declaration of sensibility. This sofa is a considered homage to Howard Keith's iconic 'Diplomat,' the defining British mid-century form produced at his Clapham atelier through the late 1950s and into the 1960s, and among the most quietly influential seating designs of the post-war London interior.
The Diplomat-form is immediately recognisable to the trained eye: the generously rounded arms with their soft forward roll, the deep-filled back and seat cushions riding on a low, horizontal frame, and the splayed tapered legs that lend the piece its characteristic floating posture. Where Howard Keith's originals were upholstered in the wools and tweeds of the period, this interpretation is rendered in a richly antiqued moss velvet - its mottled, cloud-like surface evoking the worn grandeur of a Fitzrovia drawing room rather than anything freshly made.
