Period Inspiration:
Among the canonical objects of twentieth-century Modernism, Pierre Jeanneret's Kangaroo Chair stands apart - not for ornament, but for the audacity of its structural logic. Designed between 1953 and 1955 for the Capitol Complex at Chandigarh - Le Corbusier's utopian administrative city commissioned by the newly independent government of India - the chair was conceived as civic furniture: democratic in its armlessness, radical in its slab-form legs, and unmistakably sculptural in its low-slung, raked silhouette. The sweeping kangaroo-leg profile, cut from thick teak planes and chamfered at the base, gave the chair its popular name and its instant iconicity.
This example, crafted in the Anglo-Indian workshop tradition by master craftsmen in solid teak, faithfully reproduces the original Chandigarh form - the deeply inclined caned back panel, the generous caned seat, the characteristic splayed leg geometry, and the precisely routed frame junctions that define the Jeanneret vocabulary. Teak, the timber of subcontinental craft heritage, lends the form a warmth and structural authority that elevates it beyond replication into an object of cultural continuity. In the manner of Jeanneret's originals - now among the most sought-after collectibles in the global design market - this chair carries the same conviction: that modernist furniture, made honestly and made well, is architecture you sit inside.
