Château de Jouy - Louis XV Montgolfier Toile Bed

Period Inspiration:

In the autumn of 1783, two events transfixed the court of Versailles: the first untethered human ascent in a Montgolfier balloon above the Bois de Boulogne, and the simultaneous triumph of the Oberkampf manufactory at Jouy-en-Josas, whose copper-plate toiles were already the most coveted textiles in France. This bed unites both histories.

The frame is Louis XV in every particular - a serpentine headboard crested with a pierced rocaille shell cartouche, a shaped footboard joined at the centre by a second carved shell, cabriole legs with foliate knees terminating in scroll feet, and a serpentine side apron bearing a raised floral medallion between acanthus sprays. 

The upholstery is blue-on-écru Toile de Jouy depicting the Montgolfier ascents of 1783 - balloon envelopes rising above classical ruins, figures in court dress, pastoral revellers. Brass nailhead trim edges every panel.

A bed that carries the 18th century's most exhilarating moment into the room.
