Period Inspiration:

Named for the Château de Compiègne, one of the great Napoleon III residences where such low, rounded seating found favour in private boudoirs and reading corners, this crapaud armchair revives a distinctly French silhouette. The crapaud - literally "toad chair" - emerged in France during the Second Empire (1852–1870), prized for its low seat height, generously rolled and fully upholstered arms, and softly domed back, offering an intimacy of scale that formal fauteuils never intended. Unlike carved show-wood chairs of the same era, the crapaud form deliberately concealed its frame entirely beneath upholstery, making the fabric itself the chair's defining character.

Here, that tradition is rendered in a blue-and-white ticking stripe - a textile with its own long lineage in French and English furnishing history, historically a humble utility weave elevated for country-house and boudoir use. A gathered, floor-grazing skirt completes the silhouette, a detailing device common to French provincial upholstery of the period. Hand-built on solid wood frame by master craftsmen this chair is offered as a faithful homage to the Napoleon III crapaud lineage - a piece for reading corners, dressing rooms, and quiet conversation, exactly as it was intended a century and a half ago.
