The Fifth Avenue Jazz Age Tuxedo Settee

Period Inspiration:

Named for the tailored dinner jacket born at Tuxedo Park, New York, in 1886, the tuxedo arm did not find its true home until a generation later - in the geometric, symmetrical vocabulary of the Jazz Age, when Fifth Avenue's drawing rooms and private clubrooms called for a silhouette as clean-lined as the suits worn within them. Unlike a Chesterfield's rolled arm, the tuxedo holds its arm flush with the back in one unbroken, architectural line - a quiet departure from Victorian excess, and one of the defining forms of 1920s American interior design.

This settee is built to that discipline. Box-tufted button work traces the back and inner arms in a precise, even grid, while three deep bench cushions temper the geometry with real comfort. The leather is a burnished cognac, hand-finished with a waxy pull-up patina that lightens at every fold and crease - a surface that only deepens in character with age. A plinth base on inset block feet grounds the piece without breaking its lines.

The frame beneath is solid wood, hand-built by our master craftsmen - a period form of the American clubroom, faithfully rendered for the contemporary collector.
