Period Inspiration:
A study in measured symmetry and disciplined ornament, The Fontainebleau Brass Trellis Coffee Table draws from the refined vocabulary of Louis XVI Neoclassicism (c. 1760–1790) - an era that replaced Rococo exuberance with architectural clarity inspired by antiquity. The table’s defining feature is its geometric parquetry top, overlaid with a precise brass trellis (laiton stringing), forming a controlled lattice that reflects the mathematical rigor favored in late 18th-century French design.
The structure is equally canonical: tapered, fluted legs terminating in brass sabots, a restrained moulded frieze, and balanced proportions characteristic of Parisian ébénisterie workshops, particularly those of Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The teak wood exhibits a richly figured grain, enhancing the visual depth beneath the brass grid.
While rooted in 18th-century design principles, this piece aligns most closely with 19th-century Louis XVI revival craftsmanship, where historical forms were reinterpreted with technical precision. It stands as an object of quiet authority - where ornament is not applied, but calibrated.
