Few periods in the history of English furniture matched the High Victorian era's appetite for learned eclecticism - and this magnificent side console table, hand-crafted in pure teak, stands as a definitive expression of that ambition. Conceived in the manner of the great London cabinet-making workshops of circa 1860–1880, the piece synthesises four distinct historical vocabularies with the confidence of a craftsman schooled in period precedent.

The bulbous baluster legs, gadrooned in the melon-cut manner of Jacobean Revival carvers, rise from scrolled volute feet that echo the boldness of William & Mary baroque turning. Between them, a serpentine carved stretcher - centred by a scallop shell cartouche, the enduring motif of Rococo Revival ornament - lends the base a theatrical drama wholly characteristic of High Victorian interiors. The apron, framed by acanthus scroll panels and anchored by a second shell escutcheon above the single frieze drawer, completes a composition of remarkable decorative density.
