Period Inspiration:

Le Lit Rouge de Choisy takes its name from the riverside château Louis XV purchased in 1739 as a private escape from the formality of Versailles - a residence since vanished, demolished after the Revolution, but whose taste for intimate, curved-line luxury survives in pieces like this one.

Lacquered in a deep, lustrous crimson and finished with hand-carved, hand-gilded ornament, this Louis XV Rococo bed is built on the style's defining vocabulary: a rocaille (shell-and-scroll) cartouche crowns the headboard, gilded acanthus scrolls the shoulders and footboard, and cabriole legs carry a serpentine, shell-centred rail. Its diamond-tufted champagne upholstery belongs to a later chapter of the story - deep-button tufting entered the upholsterer's repertoire only with the coiled spring, and it was the Rococo Revival of the 1850s-80s that first paired that technique with Louis XV carving. This bed continues that lineage rather than reproducing an 18th-century original outright.
