The Marylebone Library Roll-Arm Sofa

Period Inspiration:

In the townhouses of late Victorian and Edwardian Marylebone, the library stood apart from the drawing room, panelled and book-lined, furnished for reading long into the evening rather than for formal callers. Its sofa developed accordingly: lower and deeper than the tufted showpieces of the reception rooms, with generously rolled arms and loose, plump cushions built for settling in rather than sitting upright for company. Leather was the material of choice, valued because it resisted holding the smell of pipe smoke and coal fire, and only grew more handsome with use.

The Marylebone Library Roll-Arm Sofa revives that specific English type. The arms roll lower than the back, in the manner of the true club sofa rather than the level-arm, deep-buttoned Chesterfield, and the back is left plain and panelled, quietly correct where lesser reproductions default to tufting they were never meant to carry. Built on a solid wood frame and upholstered by hand in richly aniline-dyed wine coloured leather, it will crease and deepen in tone with use, exactly as its Victorian forebears did. Turned bun feet, hand-finished in a deep dark tone, complete the silhouette.
