The New Orleans Rococo Revival Four-Poster Bed

Period Inspiration:

In the third quarter of the nineteenth century, the furniture warerooms of New Orleans’ Royal Street - Prudent Mallard, François Seignouret, and their contemporaries - perfected a distinctly American reading of the Rococo: monumental four-poster beds with soaring, scroll-carved headboards for the grandest Creole and planter households of the Mississippi Delta. This piece stands in that lineage.

Hand-carved from solid teak, the headboard rises to a crest of scrolling acanthus bordered in carved rope-twist molding, framing a bold arched show-wood panel. A cabochon cartouche, wreathed in scrolling foliage, anchors the lower panel - the same device found on the era’s most celebrated New Orleans market beds. The head posts terminate in acorn-turned finials; the foot posts carry cannonball finials over reeded columns, echoing the earlier American Federal turned-post bed. A baluster spindle gallery beneath the headboard completes the silhouette.

An original interpretation in the Rococo Revival manner, this solid teak four-poster bed is built for the modern bedroom, carrying the weight and presence of an heirloom. Every element is hand-cut and hand-finished by master craftsmen, continuing a tradition of European period forms realised in teak.
