Period Inspiration:

Named for Thomas Chippendale's Yorkshire birthplace, this Chippendale-style ball-and-claw elbow chair reflects the Gothic taste the master cabinetmaker popularized in his 1754 pattern book, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director

A serpentine crest rail with out-scrolled ears crowns a pierced splat of interlaced ogee arches, tracery adapted from English Gothic architecture for the Georgian drawing room. Shepherd's-crook arms sweep to soft scrolled terminals, and cabriole front legs end in bold, hand-carved ball-and-claw feet, a pairing found on fine English and American Chippendale seating of the period. Rear legs are chamfered in period-correct style, and the seat is fitted as a drop-in slip seat, upholstered in a rich emerald velvet.

This elbow chair, the 18th-century term for an open armchair as distinct from an armless side chair, is hand-carved and joined using traditional cabinetmaking techniques for lasting strength. Equally suited to a dining table, a writing desk, or a library, it brings authentic Georgian and Chippendale design language into a room built for daily use. A versatile centrepiece for refined English-style interiors.
