The Palm Springs Mid-Century Tufted Ivory Sofa

Period Inspiration:

In the years following the Second World War, a new grammar of living took root in the sun-bleached modernist estates of Palm Springs - spare, horizontal, uncompromising in its rejection of Victorian ornament yet deeply committed to sensuous material comfort. It was within this crucible that Maurice Bailey, designing for the celebrated Los Angeles atelier Monteverdi-Young, produced some of the most resolved upholstered forms of the American Mid-Century canon.

This tufted ivory velvet sofa draws directly from that lineage. The silhouette is characteristically Baileyesque: a long, low rectilinear frame with squared arms set flush against the back panel, the entire composition held in disciplined architectural tension. The backrest is executed in full diamond button-tufting, while the generously proportioned seat deploys vertical channel-tufting - the so-called biscuit treatment - lending the cushion a sculptural, almost tactile rhythm. The upholstery is a warm crème ivory velvet of quiet luminosity.

The base is crafted in solid wood, formed as a continuous plinth-rail raised on four tapering legs with elegantly arched cutouts - a detail that lifts the form without compromising its gravity.
