The Portman Square Hepplewhite Dining Suite

Period Inspiration:

When George Hepplewhite's widow Alice published The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide in 1788, two years after his death, she codified an aesthetic that had already begun to transform the dining rooms of Georgian England. The shield-back chair  Hepplewhite's most celebrated and enduring invention - appears in that volume in no fewer than two dozen variations, each a study in disciplined elegance: the back carved into the form of a heraldic shield, the splats radiating in a wheat-sheaf or Prince of Wales feather configuration from a carved central boss, the whole supported on tapered, reeded legs. It was a design made for the patrician households of Portman Square and Cavendish Square, where Robert Adam's interiors demanded furniture of precisely this refinement.

This suite - an oval extension dining table accompanied by six shield-back side chairs - is a faithful and scholarly reinterpretation of that canon, executed in richly figured teak. The chairs present the full lexicon - shield-form back with radiating splats beneath a wheat-sheaf crest carving, gadrooned collar above tapered reeded front legs, drop-in upholstered seat in ivory linen - while the table answers with an oval top of exceptional figured grain, a moulded apron, and six matching reeded and gadrooned legs that make the suite unmistakably coeval.
