Here stands a fauteuil à la Reine of singular composure - an armchair conceived in the full lyrical vocabulary of the Louis XV Rococo, rendered in teak wood. The form follows the canonical French menuisier tradition of the mid-18th century: a cartouche-shaped dos plat back rising to a carved crest rail bearing the shell-and-scroll rocaille motif that gave an entire aesthetic era its name. The serpentine seat rail flows without interruption into four sinuous cabriole legs terminating in scrolled pieds en volute - every line a deliberate repudiation of the straight and the severe.

The open armrests describe a fluid descent from scrolled handhold to incurved arm support, a gesture of ergonomic grace that the great Parisian menuisiers - Tilliard, Heurtaut, Delanois - had perfected by 1750. Upholstered in saffron-and-ivory striped fabric with gold gimp trim, the chair speaks the precise textile language of the French salon.

That this interpretation is realised in teak rather than Parisian walnut or beech is no diminishment - it is provenance. The French Rococo idiom travelled east through pattern books and imported exemplars, finding in the Anglo-Indian workshop tradition a second, enduring life. This fauteuil is that tradition at its most assured: Versailles remembered through the grain of the tropics.
