Rocaille & Rosette - A French Vert Céladon Lit de Maître

Period Inspiration:

Conceived in the spirit of the great Parisian ateliers that served the French court during the reign of Louis XV (1715–1774), this exceptional bed revives the Rococo idiom at its most sophisticated. The headboard is a masterwork of the carver's art: an arched cartouche crowned by a central rosette - the fleur du roi - from which acanthus scrolls and asymmetric rocaille volutes radiate in gilded relief, the defining grammar of the French Rococo. 

Within its gilded surround, two panels of hand-laid French cane breathe lightness into the structure, a technique perfected under Louis XV when rattan - imported through the Compagnie des Indes - became the material of aristocratic interiors at Versailles and Fontainebleau. The frame is finished in vert céladon, a soft blue-green with antique provenance evoking both Chinese export porcelain and the painted boiseries of the grands appartements, set against burnished parcel-gilding. Cabriole legs rise from scrolled feet, their knees carved with acanthus-and-tulip devices in high relief - a detail that appears on documented pieces in the collections of the Louvre and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. 

A bed of museum provenance and private grandeur, equally at home in a Haussmann apartment or a country house library.
