The Rue de Cléry Sentinel Canapé

Period Inspiration:

Specialist dealers credit Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1759–1848), master joiner of Paris's rue de Cléry, with originating the carved lion-mask arm terminal that came to define French Empire seating, ahead of the more celebrated Jacob workshop. The Rue de Cléry Sentinel Canapé is offered in this Demay tradition: twin lion masks, carved in the round rather than cast and applied, stand sentinel over gently scrolled arms. Fluted, tapering legs descend to hand-carved paw feet, each seat-rail corner marked by a carved rosette patera, the front rail bowed in the true Empire manner. The back and seat are upholstered in a fine diamond-lattice weave, framed edge to edge in carved wood.

Where most Empire ateliers reached for gilt bronze, Demay carved his ornament directly into the wood, a discipline this solid teak sofa continues. Our master craftsmen hand-carve it within The Collectors' Anglo-Indian workshop tradition, teak standing in for the historical mahogany. It is offered as a canapé attributed to and in the lineage of Demay's documented Empire seating, not a reproduction of any single surviving example.
