Period Inspiration:

A historically grounded interpretation of the Anglo-Indian four-poster, this Suratte Peacock Court Bed draws from late-19th-century teak furnishings produced along the mercantile belt of Surat (then widely rendered “Suratte” in colonial records) and the Bombay Presidency. Workshops in this region were renowned for dense hand carving in seasoned teak, merging European canopy-bed proportions with indigenous courtly motifs - most notably the peacock, long associated with regal authority and auspicious domestic interiors across western India.

The crested headboard features a confronting pair of peacocks framed by scrolling foliate work and stylised rosettes, carved in high relief with a compositional symmetry typical of export and commission furniture made for colonial residences and merchant courts. Deeply turned posts rise to a classical four-poster canopy frame, recalling British campaign and bungalow architecture while retaining subcontinental carving idioms. The footboard and rails continue the avian and floral programme, executed in solid teak with visible tool marks and grain character that echo period workshop methods rather than machine-finished modern reproductions.

Historically, such beds occupied reception chambers and principal bedchambers in port-city homes from Surat to Bombay, where maritime trade fostered a hybrid decorative language. This piece maintains that lineage: structurally robust, materially faithful to teak traditions, and ornamented in a manner consistent with late-colonial western Indian court and merchant furniture between circa 1880 and 1910.
