Period Inspiration:

The Faubourg Saint-Antoine Cane Bed draws its lineage from one of Europe’s most storied furniture quarters. For centuries, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris was home to the ébénistes - master cabinetmakers who supplied beds, chairs, and commodes to royal households, aristocratic hôtels particuliers, and later, refined bourgeois interiors.

This bed reflects that tradition with scholarly restraint. Its softly contoured headboard, framed in solid hardwood and infilled with hand-woven cane, recalls the late Louis XV to early Louis XVI transition, when ornament softened, proportions lightened, and furniture became more architectural than theatrical. Cane, prized for both ventilation and elegance, was widely used in France’s warmer salons and traveled easily into colonial contexts, from Pondicherry to Saigon.

The frame is elevated on gently shaped legs, avoiding heaviness while retaining structural dignity. The slatted base follows period logic: breathable, resilient, and engineered for longevity rather than excess upholstery. Nothing here is decorative without purpose; every curve and joint is a conversation between comfort and craft.

Made entirely by hand and only on order, this bed is not an imitation of the past but a continuation of it - an object that could sit as convincingly in a Parisian townhouse as in a coastal colonial home, where light, air, and calm were essential luxuries.
