The Louis XV Écritoire de Salon Writing Suite

Period Inspiration:

A masterpiece in the Rococo Revival idiom, this writing suite takes its aesthetic lineage directly from the Louis XV period (circa 1730–1770), an age when French ébénistes transformed domestic furniture into sculptural art. The suite comprises an elegantly serpentine writing desk with a superstructure of drawers and a matching salon chair upholstered in deep black leather, each crafted with a fidelity that honours the great Parisian workshops of Nicolas Heurtaut, Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, and the Cressent atelier.

A Symphony of Curves and Carving
The desk’s façade unfolds in the classic rocaille vocabulary: asymmetrical scrolls, fluid cartouches, stylised foliage, and hand-carved floral motifs reminiscent of the decorative programs found in Parisian hôtels particuliers. No straight line interrupts the composition; instead, each contour flows seamlessly into the next - an essential characteristic of mature Rococo design. The upper cresting, with its exuberant foliate spray and shell cartouche, draws direct inspiration from documented French bureau de dame and bonheur-du-jour forms of the mid-18th century. Below it, the drawers exhibit raised, shaped panels, an unmistakable hallmark of Louis XV craftsmanship, where ornament is always integrated rather than applied.

The Salon Chair
The accompanying chair retains the same Rococo sensibility, with a carved floral crest, moulded frame, and a sinuous stance that echoes aristocratic seating found in 18th-century salons littéraires. Its black leather upholstery, finished with individually affixed brass tacks, pays homage to the luxurious but practical choices made for writing and reading chairs of the period.
