In the quiet elegance of the late 18th century - an age when Paris turned its gaze from the arabesques of Rococo toward the reasoned geometry of Antiquity - tables such as this graced the salons of the Louvre’s private apartments. Its oval top, composed of richly figured timber veneers, embodies the refined symmetry cherished during the reign of Louis XVI, when cabinetmakers embraced structure, clarity and architectural harmony.

Along the table’s perimeter, a circlet of ormolu (gilt-bronze) moulding frames the surface like a restrained jewel setting - an unmistakable hallmark of the Parisian ateliers that supplied the aristocracy and high court. Beneath, a delicate apron rests upon four tapering, fluted legs, each crowned with a gilded collar that evokes the acanthus-bound motifs of classical Corinthian ornament.

This is a table shaped not only by its materials but by an intellectual movement: the Enlightenment’s rediscovery of Greece and Rome, the archaeological revelations of Pompeii, and a renewed reverence for proportion and poise.
