Period Inspiration:
The Regent Street Clubroom Settee is conceived in the tradition of 19th-century British gentleman’s club furniture, where upholstery was designed to convey permanence, comfort, and restraint rather than display. Its deeply buttoned leather back and seat follow upholstery practices perfected during the Victorian period, prized for both durability and visual discipline. The generous scroll arms, softly rounded yet architecturally contained, echo forms commonly found in London clubrooms and private libraries.
Structurally, the settee is distinguished by its turned wooden legs and spindle-backed rail, a feature bridging bench-derived seating with fully upholstered sofas. This construction allowed for airflow and structural clarity while reinforcing the horizontal emphasis favored in institutional interiors. The leather - traditionally dyed in subdued greens and browns - was chosen to age gracefully, developing a patina rather than ornament.
Named for Regent Street, a thoroughfare synonymous with 19th-century refinement and metropolitan order, this piece reflects an interior culture shaped by routine, conversation, and quiet authority.
