The Trianon Louis XVI Garland Bed

Period Inspiration:

The Trianon Louis XVI Garland Bed takes its name from the Petit Trianon, gifted by Louis XVI to Marie Antoinette in 1774 - the Versailles retreat whose architecture already marked the turn from Rococo curve to neoclassical restraint. This bed carries that same vocabulary: a gently bowed headboard and footboard, each crowned with a gadrooned top rail and centred on a hand-carved floral wreath, its ribbon knot gathering swags of drapery that fall to tasselled ties at the corners. 

The device is pure Louis XVI - festooned garlands drawn from classical relief and carved by royal menuisiers such as Georges Jacob, who supplied beds and seat furniture in this idiom to Marie Antoinette's households at Versailles, Fontainebleau and Saint-Cloud. Fluted, tapering corner posts rise to pineapple finials, a device drawn from the English and colonial four-poster tradition rather than the Parisian ancien régime - placing this bed within the Anglo-Indian workshop lineage, where European period forms are faithfully reinterpreted and hand-carved by master craftsmen in solid teak. Every swag, wreath and flute is hand carved, in a wood prized across the subcontinent's furniture tradition for holding crisp detail across generations. A bed for a room that wants the discipline of Versailles without surrendering to it.
