Period Inspiration:
In 1848, Queen Victoria acquired Balmoral. By 1853, Prince Albert had rebuilt it in the Scottish Baronial manner and dressed its interiors in tartan from floor to ceiling - carpets, curtains, upholstery, wallcoverings. The Highland Revival that followed swept through every country house library, smoking room, and gun room in Britain. The rolled-arm library chair upholstered in hunting tartan is the most direct and most enduring furniture legacy of that moment.
This is that chair, built at its most authoritative. The form belongs to the late Victorian and Edwardian upholstered armchair tradition - generous rolled arms terminating in forward scrolls, a loose back cushion set into a fixed frame, a deep seat built for the long evening rather than the brief visit. Antique brass nailhead trim traces the arm scroll and base rail with the precision of the master upholsterer, a detail drawn directly from the great London furnishing houses - Heal & Son, Maple & Co. - that defined Victorian domestic comfort.
The turned front legs in dark-finished teak quote the bulbous vase-turning of the William & Mary period - a deliberate Victorian historicist gesture that anchors the chair in the English furniture tradition even as its tartan speaks unmistakably of the Scottish Highlands.
The upholstery is a hunting tartan in the dark ground tradition - forest green, midnight navy, crimson, and gold - the colourway of the Highland estate, of the Deeside morning, of rooms that know exactly what they are.
