Period Inspiration:

Rising on four spiral-turned posts, The Barley Twist Jacobean-Revival Poster Bed is a traditional wooden four poster bed in the manner of Stuart England. The barley twist, cousin of the spiral form architects call the Solomonic column, became a hallmark of English furniture after the Restoration of 1660. Four such columns, at bedchamber scale, also recall the Solomonic columns of Bernini's Baldacchino in St Peter's, Rome. Here the spiral returns in the dark-stained spirit of the Jacobean Revival, the revival of seventeenth-century English design that flourished from the nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth.

Tall head posts and lower foot posts, each crowned with a turned finial, frame a headboard of nine spiral spindles set between a moulded, arcaded top rail and a scalloped lower rail. Chamfered square blocks mark the joints in the classic turned-post manner. Moulded, panelled side rails, a slatted base and turned feet complete an open poster bed with no canopy frame.

This barley-twist four poster bed suits period-inspired, country and heritage bedrooms, and gives modern rooms a striking focal point. Deep tones let every spiral catch the light. A contemporary bed in a historic manner, not an antique.
