Typically dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian colonial period (circa 1880-1920), such chairs represent the sophisticated furniture that graced the exclusive clubs, bungalows, and mansions of Calcutta - the glittering capital of the British Raj.

Crafted from substantial teak, the chair showcases meticulous hand-turning evident in the gracefully bulbous legs that taper to delicate ankles. The broad yoke-style top rail curves gently to embrace the sitter, while the shaped backrest frame cradles a finely woven cane panel. The chair's most distinctive feature is its dramatically extended and elegantly curved scroll armrests. 

The rich character of this chair evokes a sudden nostalgia of the hallowed halls of the Bengal Club, Calcutta Club, or Saturday Club, where the Empire's elite gathered for conversations and the ritual reading of newspapers from London.
