Period Inspiration:
In 1951, the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier arrived in Punjab to build a city from nothing. He brought with him his cousin and closest collaborator, Pierre Jeanneret, who would spend the next fourteen years in Chandigarh - and who, quietly, designed nearly everything one sat upon, worked at, or gathered around inside the new capital's institutions. The furniture Jeanneret created for the High Court, the Secretariat, and the Capitol Complex became one of modernism's most consequential bodies of work: rigorous in geometry, humane in material, and rooted in the belief that honest craft and rational form were not opposites.
The Capitol Complex Dining Suite continues the tradition Jeanneret built - not as homage, but as living craft, and is faithful to Jeanneret's founding vocabulary. The side chairs carry his defining compass leg - the splayed, V-junction base that gives the form its structural tension and visual restlessness - paired with fine hexagonal cane panels at seat and back, flush-set within a clean orthogonal frame. The dining table answers in a quieter register: a broad-plank teak top of exceptional figuring, set upon four gently tapered legs with minimal apron - architecture reduced to its essentials. Together, they are Mid-Century Modernism not as style, but as argument: that beauty and utility, properly understood, are the same thing.
