Cossimbazar Mansion House Poster Bed

Period Inspiration:

This four-poster bed draws from the domestic architecture and furnishing traditions of Cossimbazar (Kasimbazar), Murshidabad, one of the principal mercantile and administrative centres of the Bengal Subah during the late Mughal and early East India Company period. Beds of this form were common in Anglo-Indian mansion houses and garden residences across Murshidabad in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, where elevated posts supported mosquito netting and lightweight canopy cloth suited to the humid riverine climate of the Bhagirathi basin.

The turned and reeded posts reflect British Georgian joinery translated through local teak craftsmanship, while the pierced and carved headboard recalls regional Bengali wood carving seen in zamindari residences and Company-era bungalows. Such hybrid forms - European in structural conception yet executed by Indian artisans - were characteristic of elite households in Cossimbazar, where Armenian, British, and Bengali patrons commissioned durable teak furnishings for long-term residence.

Constructed in solid hardwood with traditional joinery, the bed preserves the restrained proportions and practical canopy frame typical of Bengal Presidency domestic furniture. It is an academically faithful revival of the Anglo-Indian mansion house poster bed associated with Murshidabad’s late-18th-century urban estates.
