The Lombardy Fold: Tufted Oxblood Leather Sofa

Period Inspiration:

The Lombardy Fold takes its name from Lombardy's Brianza district in northern Italy, anchored by the town of Cantù, which has shaped European furniture craftsmanship since the 18th century and by the 1950s produced roughly a third of Italy's furniture output. This tufted oxblood leather sofa channels that legacy of exacting upholstery work into a low, armless, two-seat silhouette built for modern rooms. Its backrest is worked in biscuit tufting, a grid-stitched technique prized for its clean, contemporary lines, while the deep seat cushions are finished in channel tufting for a fuller, more sculptural profile. Both are dressed in genuine oxblood leather, a color first recorded in English usage between 1695 and 1705 and named for the deep, oxidizing red of ox blood, a hue long favored in fine leathercraft because it darkens and gains character with age and handling. 

Fully upholstered on the reverse with no exposed legs, this sofa is finished for viewing from every angle, equally suited as a floating room divider or backed against a wall. A waterfall-edge seat and gently curved base keep its profile low and grounded, pairing naturally with walnut, brass, and bouclé. An armless leather sofa built for apartments, studios, and modular living-room layouts, rooted in real upholstery heritage.
