A studied expression of late 18th-century French neoclassicism, this Louis XVI bergère à coussin reflects the intellectual shift from Rococo exuberance to architectural restraint under the reign of Louis XVI. The frame is rigorously ordered: fluted, tapering legs descend from crisply carved rosette blocks; the seat rail is rectilinear and disciplined; the arm supports resolve into controlled scrolls, devoid of Louis XV’s fluid asymmetry.

The enveloping upholstered back and loose seat cushion - hallmarks of the bergère à cousin - introduce a counterpoint of comfort within this structural clarity. The softly arched crest rail, subtly restrained, aligns with the goût grec revival that defined Parisian ateliers of the 1770s–80s.
