Period Inspiration:
In the closing decades of the eighteenth century, two names defined the neoclassical English dining room. George Hepplewhite gave furniture its most elegant silhouette - the shield-back chair, codified in Alice Hepplewhite's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide of 1788, its lobed, trefoil-crowned outline becoming the definitive expression of Georgian lightness and restraint. Thomas Sheraton, publishing his Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book between 1791 and 1794, brought a more architectural rigour - reeded splats, columnar members, carved patera blocks, and fluted tapered legs of extraordinary precision.
This six-chair dining suite, paired with its demilune-ended dining table, stands at the exact confluence of both masters. The shield outline is Hepplewhite's. The tripartite fan of slender reeded splats rising from a carved wheatsheaf patera is Sheraton's. The fluted tapered legs and carved corner blocks of the extending table speak Sheraton's grammar fluently.
Where Hepplewhite gave the form, Sheraton gave the ornament. This suite inherits both.
