Period Inspiration:
A chair does not merely seat - it declares. The Mayfair Hepplewhite Shield-Back Armchair is a scholarly interpretation of the most celebrated form in English Neoclassical furniture: the shield-back chair as codified by George Hepplewhite and posthumously published in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide (London, 1788). The defining shield silhouette - waisted, arched at the crown, pointed at the foot - frames five radiating splats carved at their junctions with crisp Prince of Wales feathers, a motif intimately associated with Hepplewhite's pattern vocabulary and the fashionable drawing rooms of late-Georgian Mayfair and St. James’s.
The open arms sweep outward on gently curved supports, terminating in hand-carved volutes - a structural and decorative flourish that distinguishes the elbow chair from its side-chair counterpart. Front legs rise from gadrooned collars into clean, reeded tapers, a hallmark of the Adam-influenced Neoclassical aesthetic that swept English cabinet-making between 1775 and 1800. Executed in seasoned teak - the timber of Anglo-Indian craft tradition - with a deep walnut polish, and fitted with a drop-in seat in moss-green velvet, this armchair carries the authority of the period original and the integrity of masterful hand-workmanship.
