The Mayfair Sheraton-Revival Kidney Vanity Table

Period Inspiration:

By the final Edwardian decade, the English dressing table had reached its most assured form: a kidney-shaped top, its serpentine curve following the seated body, crowned by a triplicate mirror whose hinged wing-panels swing inward to grant the rare privilege of a three-quarter view - indispensable to the elaborate coiffures, and the hat-fittings, of the era. The Mayfair Sheraton-Revival Kidney Vanity Table takes its name from London's most fashionable Edwardian address, and from the square-tapered, spade-footed leg that Edwardian cabinetmakers revived from Thomas Sheraton's late-Georgian pattern books - a deliberate retreat from the heavier Victorian idiom before it.

Seven drawers are fitted in all: three graduated, bow-fronted drawers to each pedestal, and a shallow frieze drawer with brass escutcheon spanning the open kneehole. Brass bail handles on turned rosette backplates complete the fitting, true to the period original.
Handmade entirely in solid teak by master craftsmen, in keeping with the Anglo-Indian workshop tradition of executing English bedroom forms in native hardwood for the colonial household, this vanity table is social history as much as furniture - a dressing table built in solid wood to outlast the century it was designed for.
