The Pondichéry Double-Scroll Cane Daybed

Period Inspiration:

In the coastal ateliers of Pondichéry, where French Neoclassical taste met the caning traditions of the Coromandel, the lit en bateau - boat-form daybed - emerged as one of the most enduring furniture silhouettes to travel from Directoire Paris to colonial India. Unlike the asymmetric récamier form immortalised in Jacques-Louis David's 1800 portrait, this is the symmetrical bateau variant: twin scrolled crests of equal height, rolled and reeded like a hull turned inward on itself, uniting seat and back into one continuous sweeping line.

Hand-executed in solid teak, this daybed honours that lineage in full - the double C-scroll terminals hand-carved with tight spiral volutes, the seat and both raised end-panels fitted with fine hand-woven cane in the honeycomb cannage pattern long associated with the Coromandel Coast's caning workshops. Below, gently ring-turned bulbous legs anchor the piece with the sober proportion of French Empire cabinetry, reinterpreted by Indian craftsmen for a tropical climate - cane in place of upholstery, teak in place of gilded fruitwood.

A lit en bateau for the veranda or the study: sculptural, breathable, and built to outlast the century it references.
