Period Inspiration:
A definitive expression of mid-18th century French Rococo, this fauteuil à la reine embodies the cultivated ease of aristocratic interiors during the reign of Louis XV. Unlike the enveloping bergère, the fauteuil presents an open, upright form - its flat back designed for formal salon posture, where conversation and visibility were paramount.
The carved giltwood frame follows the sinuous logic of the Rococo: cabriole legs terminate in delicately scrolled feet, while the serpentine apron is animated with asymmetrical foliate and shell motifs - hallmarks of the rocaille vocabulary. The arm supports sweep outward with fluid continuity, rejecting the rigid symmetry that would later define Louis XVI.
The richly upholstered loose seat cushion and padded back soften the sculptural frame, creating a refined balance between ornament and comfort. Such chairs were integral to Parisian salon culture - spaces of wit, philosophy, and performance - where furniture was not merely functional, but socially coded.
This piece stands as a faithful revival of that language: animated, graceful, and unmistakably Rococo in its movement and ornamentation.
