In the official Residencies of British India - those measured, whitewashed houses that stood at the edge of princely capitals and cantonments - the bed was not merely furniture, but an article of order. The British Residency Slat-Back Poster Bed recalls these interiors with quiet authority: rooms governed by routine, climate, and restraint rather than excess.

Its tall turned posts rise with architectural certainty, originally intended to support mosquito netting and light canopies rather than theatrical drapery. The slatted headboard, practical and unadorned, reflects a tropical intelligence, allowing air to circulate freely while maintaining visual discipline. Carved acorn finials crown the posts, a familiar Georgian motif that travelled from Britain to India, adapted here by local hands and materials.

Four-poster beds in India differed markedly from their European counterparts. Height was practical, not ceremonial. Posts served climate before decoration. Slatted backs replaced upholstered panels, reducing heat retention and resisting humidity. Turned legs and posts followed Georgian and early Victorian patterns, often executed by Indian craftsmen using seasoned local hardwoods.

This colonial four poster bed is a historically grounded re-creation of this furniture tradition, faithful in proportion, material logic, and spirit. This is a bed shaped by function, hierarchy, and long habitation.
