Period Inspiration:

The Chowringhee Cane-Back Day Bed draws inspiration from Anglo-Indian seating furniture produced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when British domestic forms were adapted to the climate and materials of colonial India. Cane-backed and cane-sided seating emerged as a practical response to heat and humidity, allowing airflow while preserving the architectural clarity of European design.

This example reflects the restrained vocabulary of the Regency period: gently scrolled arms, a rectilinear seat rail, and finely fluted, tapering legs derived from classical prototypes. The woven cane panels - framed within solid timber - would have been executed by skilled local craftsmen, marrying British proportions with indigenous techniques. Such pieces were commonly placed in drawing rooms, verandahs, and private chambers, functioning as both seating and repose furniture.

Named for Chowringhee, once the cultural and residential heart of colonial Calcutta, this day bed evokes an interior world shaped by trade, adaptation, and quiet elegance. Neither purely European nor entirely vernacular, it stands as a refined hybrid - designed for comfort, climate, and cultivated living.
