Period Inspiration:

Designed in the early years of Chandigarh’s construction, this assembly seating ensemble belongs to the furniture language developed by Pierre Jeanneret for the administrative and civic interiors of the Capitol Complex. Conceived not as decorative objects but as instruments of public life, these pieces reflect Jeanneret’s radical belief that furniture should embody structure, clarity, and social purpose.

The seating is defined by its unmistakable V-leg architecture, a structural motif Jeanneret employed repeatedly across chairs, benches, and desks for government buildings. Here, the sharply angled supports are not ornamental but declarative - expressing load, balance, and honesty of construction. The geometry is rigorous, almost severe, yet softened by the warmth of solid timber and hand-woven cane.

The use of cane panels for both seat and back was a considered response to North India’s climate. Cane allowed air circulation, reduced material mass, and introduced a tactile human quality into otherwise austere civic spaces. Jeanneret consistently paired modernist form with local craft traditions, ensuring that Chandigarh’s interiors were neither imported abstractions nor nostalgic revivals, but something entirely new.

This assembly configuration - comprising a three-seat bench and companion armchairs - would have been suited to committee rooms, institutional corridors, or semi-public waiting areas within the Capitol precinct. Its low, grounded stance encourages repose without indulgence; comfort is present, but never excessive. Authority here is quiet, institutional, and enduring.
Far from being anonymous utilitarian objects, these pieces represent one of the most important furniture experiments of the twentieth century: modernism adapted to place, executed with humility and precision.
