Period Inspiration:
This refined two-seat settee exemplifies the measured elegance of French Art Deco seating produced for private Parisian interiors during the interwar period, particularly those of the Passy district. Its sculptural hardwood frame balances disciplined geometry with controlled curvature: the scroll-formed arms terminate as architectural gestures rather than ornament, while the twin vertical back splats introduce rhythm and symmetry to the composition.
Crafted in polished Teak, the settee reflects the Parisian Deco preference for material richness without excess, allowing form and proportion to carry visual authority. The upholstered leather seat, conceived as a single continuous plane, reinforces the salon function of the piece: intimate, conversational, and formally composed.
Such settees were intended for drawing-rooms rather than clubs - designed to sit against panelled walls or beneath modernist artwork, contributing to a complete decorative ensemble. This piece belongs to the mature phase of French Art Deco, when classical restraint and modern abstraction were held in deliberate balance.
